Then we'll do a quick run-through with the percussionists before the concert begins at 7:00pm. Our Orchestra Nacho Potluck Social should begin by 8:00pm and students and families are encouraged to participate if you can! 3. Since completing the mid-term self-assessment, hopefully students have been practicing diligently to be ready for this next concert. Our final playing test of Q2 is due by Sunday, December 1st. Students who know they will be out of town for Thanksgiving have been encouraged to complete the assignment before Tuesday! This is a slightly different version of playing tests than previous times. In addition to recording the playing test sections with the metronome and uploading them to google classroom, students are also going to complete a self-evaluation. The form was/will be sent home during class. It is also available on google classroom. 4.Here are the remaining concert attendance opportunities I'm aware of in Cedar: December 4 - 7:30pm @ SUU Event Center - The Piano Guys tickets available online ($32-$57) December 6 - 7:30pm @ Heritage Center - SUU Holiday Concert December 8 & 9 - 7:30pm @ Heritage Center - Orchestra of Southern Utah (Messiah) - Free December 10 - 6:00pm @ Cedar Middle School - CMS Orchestras - Free December 16 - 5:00 & 7:30pm @ Canyon View HS - CVHS Orchestra - Free (call for time) December 17 - 5:00, 6:00, 7:00pm @ Canyon View Middle - CVMS Orchestra - Free (call for time) Thanks for encouraging your child to practice every day! Dear Parents and Students,
In this e-mail: 1. Concert Tonight! 2. State Orchestra Hotel fee 3. Wednesday Morning Rehearsal 4. Graduation, next week plan 5. Music collection 6. Sectionals 7. Concert Attendance 1. Our final home concert of the year is tonight at 7:00pm. Call time for students is 6:00pm. Please wear concert black and be on time. If anyone has a round table cloth we could borrow for the table with the programs, I think it would make our concert presentation seem a little bit nicer. Please bring a snack or a treat to share for our post concert orchestra social. 2. State Orchestra is on Friday!! Students, make sure you have paid your $25 to Mrs. Slaugh for the hotel and turned in the receipt. See attached itinerary for more info. State Orch 2016 Itinerary 3. The students requested a Wednesday morning rehearsal at 8:00am this week prior to State. We had great attendance in class today! Thanks for being there! Last week, we had two days in a row with 15 students absent. We spent all morning on our full-orchestra piece. A Wednesday rehearsal will give us time to continue to polish our pieces. Students who will not be attending State Orchestra do not need to attend. 4. We will have class on Monday and Wednesday next week where we will learn Pomp and Circumstance and The National Anthem. Next week on Thursday, we will meet (with music and instruments) at the Centrum on SUU's campus for graduation practice from 11am-noon. Then, call time that afternoon is 3:30pm. Graduation begins at 4:00pm. Concert black (unless you're a senior!) 5. We will collect music after graduation. Everyone must get their music turned in or pay for a new copy from the publisher ($5-7 per piece). 6. Make sure you get your 2 sectionals before state completed and turned in. As a reminder, a sectional is a group of people working together to match intonation, bowings, style, dynamics, etc. - not an individual practicing alone. 7. Concert attendance opportunities remaining: Wednesday, May 18 - 7:00pm Canyon View HS Orchestra - Free Thursday, May 19 - 6:30-7:30pm - CMS Orchestra plays for CMS Open House - Free See you tonight! Christina Carrigan Dear Parents and Students,
In this email: 1. Guest Conductors this week 2. Upcoming performances 3. State Orchestra - Are you staying in the hotel?? 4. Bass transportation to state orchestra 5. Grades/Playing Tests 6. Early morning rehearsals with full orchestra 7. Orchestra Shirts! 8. Practice and attendance. 9. Concert attendance opportunities 1. We will be having two different guest conductors this week during orchestra. Please be on time and please have 1812 overture prepared and ready to rehearse (you know your part, you just need to learn how it fits with others!) 2. We have quite a few upcoming performances: Tuesday, May 10 - 6:00pm - Perform Orpheus in the Underworld with CMS and 5th grade orchestras Tuesday, May 17th - Last CHS concert of the year - 6:00pm call, 7:00pm performance Friday/Saturday May 20-21 - State Orchestra at Salem Hills HS, overnight trip Thursday, May 26 - Dress rehearsal in the morning, call time 3:30pm, Graduation begins at 4:00pm (We are playing pomp and circumstance, Chaconne in E minor, and maybe the Star Spangled Banner). 3. State Orchestra - I need to know if you will NOT be staying at the hotel. I have currently reserved rooms for our class. The number of rooms needed will need to be adjusted based upon playing test eligibility and who is staying with parents elsewhere. IF you have not passed/turned in your playing tests, please make it happen. I have had only one student work with me after school to try to improve. I need to know by this Friday for the room reservations. If you will be leaving with your parents, please let me know so I can adjust the reservation accordingly. Once the number of students staying at the hotel is finalized, I will send out the cost of the hotel. You will need to pay Mrs. Slaugh and turn in the receipt. ALL fees must be paid to go on the trip. 4. There is a new rule at the bus garage saying Basses cannot travel on the bus. It is frustrating and makes no sense but there you have it. Parents, if you are planning on driving up to State Orchestra and would be able to transport basses in a large vehicle, please let me know. There may be a school vehicle we could use also but we'd have to figure out district willingness to let non-district employees drive it. 5. Grades are up to date. There are 2 no-name papers in the back room for Region Evaluations. All playing tests have been graded and entered. There are still a few students who have not turned in ANY playing tests. Please, please get those submitted either on the school ipad or uploaded on the googleclassroom. Be planning on 2 sectionals prior to State Orchestra. 6. We are tentatively planning an 8:00am rehearsal on Wednesday May 11th. I know that several orchestra students will be taking the AP test. I need to find out if enough percussion/brass/wind players can come to make it worth it. We may also try a 7:00am rehearsal to work with percussion/winds/brass some morning before our concert. We will be rehearsing in class with the band students (minus percussion) next week. 7. We got our orchestra shirts last week!! However, it seems someone may have inadvertently taken two shirts. If you got home and realized that you had an extra shirt (size small), please bring it back to school so the students who were absent on Friday can get their shirts. THANK YOU to the anonymous donor who made sure each student could get an orchestra shirt for free. 8. Students, I know the end of the year is a busy time. But please practice. Please show up to rehearsal ready to learn how the parts fit together, not ready to be spoon-fed your part. Know your part, know your rhythms and notes and shifts and play in tune. Please show up to class!! We have about 10-15 students absent EVERY class. This has been going on since about January. With the exception of 1 or 2 days, we have had 1/3 of the class gone every class period for two quarters. This makes it incredibly difficult for our class to improve the way I know we can. We have an amazing group of student musicians in our class. We need everyone to be present in order to sound our best. Please practice and please come to class on time. 9. Concert Attendance Opportunities: Tuesday, May 10 - 6:00pm Cedar Middle Orchestras - Free Thursday, May 12 - 7:00pm Suzuki Strings - Free Wednesday, May 18 - 7:00pm Canyon View HS Orchestra - Free Thursday, May 19 - 6:30-7:30pm - CMS Orchestra plays for CMS Open House Have a great week. Soloists must have an accompanist March 2 - ALL make-up rehearsals and extra credit rehearsals are due by this day. March 3 - Written self-relection essay due 2. As a quick reminder, all students are expected to practice daily. We have been working on advanced technique in class (reading alternative clefs, 3 octave scales, thumb position for cello/bass players, etc.), working on St. Paul's Suite by Holst, and working on chamber music. The students have a lot to work on an the class and their ensemble is counting on their hard work and preparation! 3.Quarter 3 Concert Attendance Opportunities: As always, for the Concert Attendance Project, students should plan to attend and evaluate a performance. Non-String concerts count as half-credit or extra credit. Two non-string concerts can make up for missing a string concert. Extra concert attendance = extra credit. Sat., Feb. 13: OSU Aloha Jubilee, family event with music, art, and science. Lobby exhibits open at 1 p.m., Orchestra of Southern Utah concert at 2 p.m., Hands-on activities continue after the music to 4:30 p.m. $5 per person, babies free. Students should stay for at least 45 minutes (like a concert) – FREE Tuesday, March 8: Time for Three – String Trio at Heritage Center 7:30pm. Tickets are $40 for general admission and $15 for students, unless otherwise noted. Tuesday, March 15: CMS Orchestra Concert at 6:00pm in the CMS gym – FREE Have a great week! Dear Parents and Students,
In this e-mail: 1. Concert this week! 2. Playing Tests/Grades 3. Practice expectations 4. Post-Concert Orchestra Social 5. Extra credit opportunity 6. Concert Attendance Project 7. Homework due Tuesday 1. Our first concert of the year is on Wednesday, October 14th at 7:00pm! Students need to be at school by 6:00pm in order to get tuned and warmed up. Concert attire is all black: Black tops, black bottoms, black shoes, black tights/nylons/socks. Please no "sparklies" or accent colors. Black clothes and shoes should be "dressy" or "nice." 2. Playing Test 1 is graded (all that were handed in as of Thursday). I am currently working on grading Playing Test 2. If there is a ZERO, that means I have not received the playing test. If there is a check mark, that means I have received it but not yet graded it. If there are points entered, it has been graded. I spend a good deal of time on each playing test so that every student can receive individual and specific feedback. If students do not do well, they are encouraged to redo the playing test for a higher score. ALL playing tests and playing test redos are due BEFORE the concert. Students may also redo written assignments after school on Wednesdays or Fridays. 3. EVERY student is expected to practice our music. It is a requirement and expectation for orchestra class. In a class of 54 students, it is not fair for one or two kids to not learn their part and make everyone else sound unprepared. As in every class, some students are more advanced and others are less advanced. Those who are less advanced will have to put in more time to be successful than those who are more advanced. EVERY student is expected to know at a minimum the notes, rhythms, and bowings at tempo. EVERY student should also aim to play with correct dynamics, phrasing, vibrato, etc. I stay after school on Wednesdays and Fridays to help any students who are struggling, any students who want help, or students who want a place to practice. On Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, students are welcome to come practice with me at Cedar Middle School after school. Students should be practicing EVERY night for their orchestra homework. Several things you should see in their at home practice are: 1. Counting and clapping rhythms 2. Counting and airbowing rhythms 3. Pizzing (plucking) and saying note names 4. Bowing the music 5. Practicing with a metronome slowly and then faster until at tempo Students are encouraged to practice with and listen to the professional recordings that are posted on the webpage. 4. Immediately following our concert on Wednesday evening, we will be having our first Orchestra Social of the year. Please bring a treat or snack to share so that students and their families can have a chance to refuel after the concert and get to know each other. 5. Students who are good at tuning have the opportunity to earn extra credit points on Tuesday night by going to Cedar Middle School at 5:30pm to help tune before the CMS orchestra concert. Students must check in with Ms. Carrigan and also turn in a paper that says they helped tune. 6. As a reminder, every student needs to attend ONE string concert per quarter (additional concerts of any sort count as extra credit). Students must complete the Concert Attendance Form (found in class or on the webpage) front AND back to earn credit. There is a CMS concert on Tuesday of this week at 6:00pm and it is FREE! This is the last in-town concert that I know about for this quarter. 7. Students, here is your e-mail reminder to listen to our in-class recordings from Friday and write the 3 things we most need to improve in each piece before our concert on Wednesday. Remember to use complete sentences and correct music terminology. The recordings are posted on the webpage. Have a great week! Christina Carrigan The first playing test has been assigned. Students will record their tests while playing along with the metronome. Tests may be submitted via gmail, shared via google drive, or recorded on the school iPad. Please see the attached document for specific playing test sections. The first playing test is due September 29th but may be submitted earlier.
